David and Frances Frances Portrait

David and Frances Hawkins, passionate and dedicated educators, learned so they could teach, and taught so they could learn. David’s widely influential theories on education crossed the domains of economics, physics, mathematics, biology, social and political science.  With depth and subtlety, his wife Frances, through years of classroom experience, documented in books and journal articles the many ways in which children learn. They drew upon each other's work, and together connected with thousands of students and colleagues worldwide.

Hawkins Centers of Learning serves the education community by preserving and articulating the Hawkins' work, and by translating the body of Hawkins' theories into practice.

PRESERVATION
OUTLOOK Magazine, published from 1970-1986, was the journal of The Mountain View Center for Environmental Education, in Boulder, Colorado. It was a major forum for the articulation of Hawkins' theoretical work and practice.  All articles not under copyright are available HERE, and through the OUTLOOK link above.  Our physical archives are located at Boulder Journey School, in Boulder, Colorado, and are viewable by appointment.  They consist of letters, photos, journals, books and articles.  To schedule an appointment, please contact Ellen Hall, HERE.

ARTICULATION
Contemporary reflection and commentary on the the Hawkins' work, theories and lives.

TRANSLATION INTO PRACTICE
Hawkins' theories lead directly to practices which open worlds of discovery for both Educator and Child.  Educators worldwide use these practices in dynamic relationships in which both they and Children are the learners.  Click HERE for a wonderful example of Hawkins' theories applied to Children and drawing.
